HERA, together with Health Partners International, has implemented a contract with DFID for starting up and running the MeTA Secretariat of the Medicines Transparency Alliance.
HERA is a founding member of the consortium that implements the Medicines Transparency Alliance Secretariat. The 1st phase of MeTA was a pilot programme working to improve access to medicines by increasing transparency and accountability in the health care marketplace through multi-stakeholder collaboration. The UK Department for International Development (DFID) provided initial funding. Other partners included governments, global and national civil society organisations, pharmaceutical and other business interests, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank.
HERA partner Wilbert Bannenberg was the Technical Director of the MeTA Secretariat. As such, he was responsible for country support in seven countries: Ghana, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Peru, the Philippines, Uganda and Zambia. Other HERA staff acted as country consultants or provided technical assistance on procurement issues.
HERA partners supported the design and implementation of a World Bank Institute capacity building pilot project aiming at improving governance in pharmaceutical procurement through regional networking in the East African Community (EAC).
