Regional and national pharmaceutical policies are important tools for attaining the goal of universal access to medicines. They constitute the formal commitment of governments to adhere to values, norms and standards laid down in the policies; define national (or regional) goals and objectives for the pharmaceutical sector; and spell out strategies and priorities.
While in the earlier years the focus was on pharmaceutical systems of the public sector, today pharmaceutical policies take a more comprehensive approach covering public and private sectors. HERA has undertaken several reviews which facilitated adjustments in national pharmaceutical policies, strategies or sector plans. HERA has also actively supported countries in developing or reviewing their national policies. At regional level HERA is contributing to pharmaceutical policy reform and implementation.
