Narrative description of project:
The Saving Newborn Lives (SNL) project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by Saving Newborn Lives / Save The Children, has operated as a catalyst to prioritize and accelerate progress in newborn survival and health through collaborative partnerships for more than 15 years. For its third grant (2013–2017), SNL seeks to “bend the curve” on newborn health by working with partners to take key newborn interventions to scale. SNL 3 focuses on maintaining momentum for newborn care and survival at the global level, institutionalizing newborn health interventions at high effective coverage in four “tier 1” countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, Malawi, and Uganda), and targeting specific issues to enhance progress where SNL has a comparative advantage in the Gates Foundation’s key geographies (Ethiopia, India, and Nigeria) — SNL’s “tier 2” countries.
EnCompass LLC was contracted to conduct the external mid-term evaluation. hera was sub-contracted by EnCompass to provide the services of one consultant.
Description of services provided:
The consultant was team leader for the country studies for Nigeria and Ethiopia. Contribution to development of: evaluation design, data collection tools, codebook for coding of document and interviews. Conduct phone interviews to global and country stakeholder. In-depth study of activities in Ethiopia and Nigeria (field visit to both countries, interviews to key informants, focus group discussions) elaboration of country evaluation briefs for Ethiopia and Nigeria. Contribution to elaboration of the global synthesis report
